This book is the first in a series of books that follow the exploits of Belisarius in this era. This book features very good maps, elaborate descriptions of battle tactics, and good character development, particularly in the wives, Theodora and Antonina. The language is livened up by modern terminology such as "hooking up," "He wouldn't notice if I shaved my head," and references to such characters as David and Goliath. The history is accurate, and the fictional interaction is entertaining. This is a great series.
